Facts About an Allograft Procedure

Firstly, an allograft refers to transplanting tissue from one individual to another. When tissue is transferred to the same person’s body, it’s called an autograft. There are different types of allografts. For example, a bone allograft. These types of allografts are used to repair limbs or in dental surgery. Other examples include skin allografts. These types of allografts refer to skin transplanted from one patient to another. An allograft is an optional solution when an autograft isn’t possible. In other words, if the patient cannot receive tissue from their own body, they may be a candidate to receive tissue from another individual.

An allograft is not a new procedure in the medical field. The surgery has been around for 150 years and has been improved since it was first performed. Today, it is a relatively common type of surgery, with well over a million allografts performed a year in the US alone.
